Our Church History

Saint Matthews Freewill Baptist Church was organized in 1942 by the late Reverend J. B. Woodley. Reverend Woodley was the founding Pastor and accompanied by his side was his wife, the late Sister M. Woodley and a small group of members. Saint Matthews first location was N.W. 4th Avenue and 8thStreet. During this time the church appointed their first church mother, the late Mother Rebecca Jones, her and a number of other church members, the church merged with Old St. John.

In 1947, Old St. John was damaged during a revival meeting hosted by Reverend LC. Hines. The church then began to have worship service in a number of locations. From the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church edifice to an A.M.E edifice. In 1952, St. Matthews became a stationed church, in its own facility. Often referred to little Saint Matthews on N.W. 4th Court. The Lord continued to bless St. Matthews. Allowing the church to move into a much larger building on N.W. 5th Ct before settling in its final destination September 25, 1966.

Now located on 6700 N.W 2nd Avenue, the church remained under FOUNDER, PASTOR, and TEACHER, Rev. J. B. Woodley. St. Matthews grew from a seed to a tree sprouting multiple branches. During the years of 1962 and 2012, Rev. J. B. Woodley founded a number of churches that are now known as the South Florida Annual Conference "B" Division. Rev. J. B. Woodley went on to guide and lead Saint Matthews before passing early morning on January 16, 1968. Not before he was able to groom another minister, however. The God sent minister was Reverend Abe Randall. Who was deeply appreciated by Woodley and personally chosen to take over the already lit flame of Saint Matthews.

During Bishop Randall’s tenure as Pastor, beginning on April 4th, 1968, Saint Matthews experienced a great deal of growth and continuance in the name of the Lord. Saint Matthews went on to grow a historical administrative staff, along with a number of ministries within its facility. Becoming a well-known home and place of peace for people in the community all through God’s good grace.

After 44 years as a dedicated servant and anointed leader, Bishop Abe Randall officially retired as Pastor of Saint Matthews United American Freewill Baptist Church on December 31, 2012. Handing the torch over to our now current Pastor, Bishop Paul E. Moss JR. He is yet pressing toward the mark, the prize and the high calling that is Christ Jesus, that will help lead our church to a bright future with our God.
